Princess Pluto – Construction Notes

Hello, it’s time for a new construction notes post ! this time it is for Sailor Pluto‘s princess dress from Sailor Moon, made for a complete group of Sailor princesses + Endymion. Sailor Pluto/Setsuna is my ultimate favorite character from Sailor Moon. In the past i have done her basic sailor scout outfit from the manga, her eternal outfit and a swimsuit version. This one is my 4th outfit of hers, and i intend to make even more in the future.

For the fabrics i chose black satin for the dress, light grey muslin for the underskirt. My wig comes from Arda, i took the “Venus” one in Olive green. I started with the underskirt, i made a circle skirt, longer at the back, very simple, yet effective and dramatic, exactly what i wanted :

For the black dress, i made a mockup directly on my dress form, here you can see the pinned version, without the shoulder straps. The dress closes at the back with a zipper. I added a hoop skirt underneath to get more volume. I also found a pretty onyx pendant to match the dress. Sewing was pretty straightforward, but the fabric was a real nightmare… i really hate to work with satin ! It is very slippery and my hems are crooked, no matter what i do… i decided to let my boytom hems simply serged…. i didn’t want to ruin everything with a crooked hem 🙁

I decided to make her Garnet Rod, although she doesn’t have it in her princess form, but it is a nice touch, i will need it for future costumes anyway and our Princess Saturn will have the Silence Glaive too. I ordered my 3D printed staff at Candicat Cosplay on Etsy. Her service is excellent, i highly recommend it (but be warned as a european buyer, i had to pay an import customs fee, include this in your budget). My job here was to sand it, prime it, paint it, and add some layers of protection top coat. As you can see it even lights up with LED !

My boyfriend helped me with the painting process (well in fact he completely did it !) and it was fun to work on it together (well i mainly watched and talked !). For the primer we used Gesso Decospray, the paint is regular paint for cars, and then of course glossy varnish for protection and shine.

For the red bulb, we used special paint for glass, it has a nice translucent effect which allows the led light to shine through.

Here are some more detailed pictures of the rod :

I also made a rose out of my satin leftovers to match the dress like in the art book illustration where all the princesses have matching roses :

And finally, here is a preview of our group, selfies and quick pictures taken with our phones on the shooting day. I can’t wait to see the pictures we took with amazing photographers !
